More money for healthcare, but we're killing babies and giving drugs to addicts.
Report: Montreal Doctors Abort 38-week-old Unborn Baby
The Story: The Catholic Register has obtained texts from a Quebec nurse documenting the late-term abortion of a 38-week-old unborn baby at Montreal’s Sacré-Cœur Hospital. According to the report, “the nurse said the baby would be euthanized in advance of a caesarean section.” The texts also “identified the mother as a homeless woman with a history of substance abuse.” The Hospital did not respond to the Register’s request for comment.
Significance: As a result of the 1988 Morgentaler decision striking down Canada’s lone abortion law—and Parliament’s subsequent failure to pass legislation—Canada is the only Western nation with no restrictions on abortion. Because of this, abortion is legal until birth and is subject only to the professional medical standards that, in this case, permitted the late-term abortion of a 38-week-old unborn baby. The inherent value and dignity of every human being necessitates legal protection for all children as a fundamental responsibility of any just government—regardless of that child’s age, size, or economic circumstances. Tragically, Canada has failed to fulfill this divinely ordained obligation.

A New Healthcare Deal Might Be On The Horizon
The Story: While national media was prepared for a long drawn-out battle between the provinces and the Liberal government over healthcare, this looks like it might wrap-up quickly. The main story right now is the discussion over the pre-conditions for the $46.1 billion in new health care transfers.
The Significance: Ignore the provincial drama or the endless number of times Pierre Poilievre will be asked whether or not he would uphold the deal if elected Prime Minister (he already said he would), the real story here is attaching extra conditions for healthcare money. Despite the proposed conditions mostly focusing on data sharing, Justin Trudeau has previously withheld healthcare money from provinces that weren’t providing the unlimited abortion access he prefers—not to mention that the past three years have shown how willing many politicians are to mix politics and healthcare. The bottom line is that we need to be demanding actual improvements to our healthcare system, not more political posturing.

BC Decriminalizes Hard Drugs
The Story: The BC Government has announced its decision to stop prosecuting drug users for the possession of hard drugs, including meth and heroin. The decision comes amid a worsening drug crisis that has turned large parts of Vancouver into a homeless encampment and has even drawn the attention of Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilevre who described the city’s situation as, “a complete disaster.”
Significance: The BC Government argues that this policy shift will allow users to seek treatment without fearing legal repercussions for possession, ultimately reducing the province’s escalating overdose death rate. Missing from the Government’s calculation, however, is an understanding that human beings have been created for particular ends, designed to flourish, and made to fulfill God’s natural purpose for their lives. The destruction caused by drug addiction distorts this divine intent and prohibits human beings from fulfilling the ends for which they have been created. Further enabling the use of hard drugs will only serve to worsen the lives of those who are experiencing the results of purposelessness. Government has been instituted to condone good and condemn evil. When these categories are reversed, precious men and women will suffer the horrific consequences.

Liberals Back Down On Two Key Pieces Of Legislation
The Story: First the Liberals made a drastic about-face and put forward a bill to push the deadline for euthanasia (MAiD) expansion (which would extend assisted suicide to Canadians suffering solely from mental health issues) to 2024 instead of March 2023. Then, within the same week, they backed off a hunting rifle ban that they had repeatedly stated they were going to stick with.
The significance: These stories do not have equal significance, and neither of them are a full victory, but for the first time in eight years, the Liberals have backed down on flawed legislation after significant public backlash. The pushback on Justice Minister David Lametti’s horrific statements regarding the “right to suicide” was particularly significant and should empower all Canadians who believe in the value of every human life to keep pushing: the Liberals have stated this is merely a delay, not an actual withdrawal of the disastrous policy.

16-year-old Ontario Student Arrested After Stating Belief in Traditional Sexuality
The Story: St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in Renfrew, ON, suspended Grade 11 student Josh Alexander for stating, in his words, that “there were only two genders and you were born either a male or a female…and then I said that gender doesn’t trump biology.” After showing up to class despite the suspension, the School had Alexander arrested on trespassing charges.
Significance: Despite its name, St. Joseph’s Catholic High School has abandoned Catholic teaching by installing the creed of the secular left as its primary guide for the placement of religious affection—further indicating secularism’s thorough transformation of Canadian society. However, this story also exemplifies the unwillingness of many LGBTQ revolutionaries to co-exist with those who hold to a traditional understanding of sexual morality. Fundamentally, this refusal results from a question of societal ultimacy. If personal sexual autonomy is a society’s highest good, then any refusal to acknowledge that autonomy is, in fact, a threat to the society itself. As a result, many Canadian institutions are using coercive force to punish speech that opposes the new sexual order. Bravo to courageous young Josh Alexander who dared to speak the truth anyway.
