Emergencies Act Enquiry Report Released.

Story: Commissioner Paul Rouleau released the over 2000 page report following the Enquiry into whether the threshold had been met for the implementation of the never before used Emergencies Act to shutdown the freedom Convoy. Rouleau said he believed the threshold had been met, but also noted many failures of government and policing that had led to the situation.

Significance: We don’t need to kid ourselves. Zero people in Canada, including the members of the government were ever going to change their minds about the Freedom Convoy, Justin Trudeau or the Emergencies Act because of this report. Instead of focusing on the implementation of the Emergencies Act itself, it should never be forgotten that Justin Trudeau unnecessarily introduced a widely scorned requirement for truckers to be vaccinated, fuelled the division with inflammatory language, ignored what was going on in front of his doorstep, and then turned to the most extreme solution. Regardless of the technicalities of the Emergencies Act, it was ultimately a sign of failed leadership. Today’s news has no impact on that fact.

Biologically Male Infant Rapist Transferred to Women’s Prison that Houses Children

Story: According to a report from Redux, Adam Laboucan, who was convicted of raping a 3-month-old baby in 1997, has been transferred to a BC women’s prison that contains a mother-baby unit after he claimed a transgender identity.

According to the article, “one inmate confirmed that Laboucan was being housed in a unit next to the Mother-Child Program residence, and said that he had been ‘staring’ at the children to ‘antagonize’ the women.”

Significance: By designing human beings as male and female, God not only gifted each person with an immutable biological sex but also entrusted vulnerable children to the loving care of their parents. By transferring a convicted child sex offender to a prison that houses infants, BC officials have demonstrated moral cowardice and rejected the responsibility they have to protect the children in a justice system they are directly responsible for. No personal identity is worth compromising the safety of a precious child made in God’s own image. This objectionable transfer should be protested by British Columbians at every opportunity.

Majority of Canadians Oppose MAiD for Mental Illness

Story: A new poll released this week reveals that only one-third of Canadians are comfortable with the idea of offering euthanasia for reasons relating to mental illness. The Angus Reid Institute poll revealed that a majority of Canadians outright oppose the proposed expansion, with a solid majority of Canadians in every region outside of Quebec saying they are not comfortable with extending access to medically assisted dying to those suffering from mental illness. 

Significance: Despite the horrifying recommendations of the Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying being tabled in Parliament this week, the news that Canadians across the country and across party lines oppose the expansion received very little press. The fact remains, however, that many Canadians are justifiably shocked by the rapid expansion of MAiD and even those who initially supported euthanasia legalization are growing uncomfortable. As one former supporter of the legislation said, “a society that justifies euthanasia for juveniles needs to pause and reflect on whether it truly values life.” We need to keep pushing back against the government’s promotion of death at every opportunity. Their advancement has been slowed and we cannot stop fighting for the value of life.

Toronto Mayor John Tory Resigns After Committing Adultery

Story: After admitting to engaging in a years-long affair with a 31 year-old staffer, Tory announced that he would resign from public office for “not meeting the standards to which I hold myself as Mayor and as a family man.” Tory officially resigned on Thursday despite pleas from Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who urged Tory to retain the position even after the inappropriate relationship was made public. 

Significance: Unfortunately, infidelity and divorce are commonplace in Canada’s political landscape. A 2013 Maclean’s report indicated that 85% of Members of Parliament had been divorced—many of them due to marital unfaithfulness. Despite secular arguments to the contrary, faithlessness and poor character in private life will certainly affect a politician's public life. Christians are among the last members of Canadian society who still understand the severity of sexual sin and, like John the Baptist during the reign of King Herod, should seek to hold all men and women in public office to a high standard of moral character.
